Motovun is the most visited of Istria’s hilltop towns and a surprisingly pleasant destination with a dog: walking the cobbled streets with your dog on a leash is enjoyable, and the climb to the old town is steep but short. From the walls there are views over the Mirna valley and the famous Motovun forest. The cafés and konobas on the way up have relaxed outdoor terraces where a dog at your feet is taken for granted. Plan realistically, though: the major operators explicitly do not allow guests to bring their own dogs on truffle hunts, because private dogs distract the trained searchers. In summer, walk early — the stone streets get very hot.
