A waymarked trail above Rakalj drops towards Kalavojna Bay on Istria’s east coast, which the ancient Greeks are said to have named after good wine; sea views open up along the way. The Istria Tourist Board lists the trail in its guide to visiting the Marčana area with a pet. The descent is stony and steep in places, so skip it with an older or clumsy dog; in summer carry enough water for both of you.
